used to

A forma verbal used to + infinitivo é utilizada para expressar um hábito no passado que não ocorre mais no presente. Essa forma é utilizada exclusivamente no passado. Para expressar ações habituais que ocorrem no presente, usa-se o Simple Present.

Em Inglês, o verbo use, é conjugado no particípio como used. A tradução é óbvia, usar ou aproveitar. Seguem abaixo dois exemplos:

• Students are not allowed to use dictionaries in the exam. (Estudantes estão proibidos de usar dicionários durante o teste.)
• The tennis court is sometimes used as a car park. (O campo de tênis às vezes é utilizado como estacionamento de automóveis.)

O problema começa quando acrescentamos a preposição “to” após a palavra “used”. A forma used + to pode ser classificada também como uma expressão ou um phrasal verb
, com a função de colocar uma ação no passado. É o nosso tão comum “costumava”. Eu poderia dizer, por exemplo (for instance): Eu costumava jogar muito futebol. Em Inglês essa frase fica assim “I used to play a lot of soccer“. A estrutura de uma oração simples com o used to é Pronome + used to + Verbo. Confira abaixo exemplo:

• I used to study in the library. (Eu costumava estudar na biblioteca)
• I used to play the guitar. (Eu costumava tocar violão)

Só para lembrar, os pronomes no singular são: I, you, he, she, it. No plural são: we, you, they. Alguns verbos que funcionam bem com o used to são: live, study, act, enjoy, love, smoke, find.
